Exit Strategy: Downgrading CSP and Cancelling Amex Gold Without Losing Points (2026)

Before opening either card, understand your exit strategy. CSP has excellent downgrade options. Amex Gold has none. This difference matters for long-term flexibility.

CSP Downgrade Options

Chase Freedom Flex ($0/year)

5% cash back on rotating quarterly categories (activated each quarter), 3% dining, 3% drugstores, 1% everything else.

  • Your credit limit, account history, and points transfer automatically
  • UR points remain as cash back (can pool with another UR card for transfers)
  • No credit inquiry required
  • Best if you want category bonuses and the 5% rotating quarterly game

Chase Freedom Unlimited ($0/year)

1.5% on everything, 3% dining, 3% drugstores, 5% Chase Travel. Simple flat-rate card.

  • Same benefits as Freedom Flex but with a higher flat rate (1.5% vs 1%)
  • Best if you want simplicity and a good catch-all card
  • Points still pool with another CSP or Chase Sapphire Reserve if you add one later

Amex Gold: No Downgrade Path

The Amex Gold is a charge card. There is no product-change to a no-fee card. Your options are:

  • 1. Keep paying $325/year and continue using the credits
  • 2. Upgrade to Amex Platinum ($695/year) for more credits and lounge access
  • 3. Cancel the card after calling the retention line

This is one of CSP's biggest long-term advantages. If your spending habits change in a few years, you can downgrade CSP to a $0 card and keep your credit history and points. With Amex Gold, your only exit is cancellation, which means losing the account history (though Amex keeps the account on your credit report for 10 years).

Amex Retention Offers

Before cancelling Gold, always call Amex at the number on the back of your card and say you are considering cancelling. The retention department may offer:

Bonus Points

10,000 - 30,000 MR

Added to your account, sometimes with a small spending requirement ($2,000-3,000 in 3 months). At 1.5cpp, that is $150-450 in value.

Statement Credit

$50 - $150

Direct credit to your account, reducing the effective annual fee. A $150 credit makes the $325 fee effectively $175.

Protecting Your Points Before Cancelling

Amex MR Points

If Gold is your only MR card, points are forfeited on cancellation. Before cancelling, open an Amex EveryDay ($0/year) or Amex Green ($150/year) to keep your MR balance alive. Transfer points to airline/hotel partners before cancelling if you do not want another Amex card.

Chase UR Points

When you downgrade CSP to Freedom Flex or Freedom Unlimited, your UR points become cash back and survive at 1 cent per point. If you later open another CSP or Chase Sapphire Reserve, those Freedom points regain transfer partner access.

Timing Your Exit

Amex Gold: Cancel within 30 days of your annual fee posting for a full refund of the fee. After 30 days, you are charged for the full year. Set a calendar reminder for your card anniversary.

CSP: Product change anytime. There is no specific window. Some people wait for the annual fee to post and then call, but Chase will prorate a refund for the unused portion of the year in most cases.

Downgrade FAQ

Can you downgrade the Amex Gold to a no-fee card?
No. The Amex Gold is a charge card, and there is no product-change path to a no-fee Amex card. Your only options are to keep paying the fee, upgrade to Amex Platinum, or cancel the card entirely. Before cancelling, always call the retention line for a possible offer (10K-30K bonus points or $50-150 statement credit).
What can I downgrade the CSP to?
CSP can be product-changed to Chase Freedom Flex (5% rotating quarterly categories, $0/year) or Chase Freedom Unlimited (1.5% on everything, $0/year). The change takes effect immediately, requires no credit inquiry, and your credit history, credit limit, and points transfer automatically. This flexibility is one of CSP's biggest long-term advantages.
What happens to my points if I cancel Amex Gold?
If you cancel Amex Gold and it is your only Membership Rewards card, your MR points will be forfeited. To protect your points, open another MR-earning card (like Amex EveryDay or Amex Green, both with lower fees) before cancelling Gold. Your MR balance will transfer to the other card. Chase UR points survive in Freedom cards after downgrading CSP.
